The Big Dance is finally here, and with it comes the chaos, the upsets, and the opportunities to cash. The Batts Board is locked in for Day 1 with a mix of value dogs, dominant favorites, and one potential Cinderella brewing.

TCU +2.5
The 8–9 matchup is always one of the toughest to call, but it’s also one of the most common spots for an upset, even if it’s basically a coin flip.
I’m rolling with TCU here. First games of the tournament tend to start slower and tighter, and that favors a team catching points. The Horned Frogs can grind, and in a lower-scoring environment, that +2.5 becomes even more valuable. This feels like one that comes down to the wire, and I want the points in my pocket.
Duke -27
Yeah, it’s a big number. I don’t care.
Duke is coming off an emotional, tight ACC Championship game, and now they get a clear mismatch in the first round. This is a classic statement game spot where a top program comes out and lets off steam.
Siena simply doesn’t have the talent or depth to hang for 40 minutes. If Duke gets rolling early, this turns into a runaway. I’m expecting the Blue Devils to make a statement and win this one by 30+.
BYU -2.5
This one is simple. Stars win in March.
BYU has AJ Dybantsa, and when you have the best player on the floor in tournament settings, that’s usually enough. Texas may have survived the play-in, but that doesn’t change the matchup.
BYU is the better team, and they have the kind of go-to talent that takes over games in March. I expect them not only to handle Texas here, but to carry that momentum into Saturday as well.
St. Mary’s -3
This line feels too easy, and sometimes that’s for a reason.
The SEC isn’t what it was a year ago, and Texas A&M is walking into a brutal stylistic matchup. St. Mary’s plays slow, physical, and disciplined basketball, exactly the kind of team that frustrates opponents like A&M.
They control tempo, limit mistakes, and force you to play their game. That’s a nightmare in March. Laying just a bucket here feels like value.
UPenn +25.5
Here’s where things get interesting.
There’s not much noise around this game, but that’s exactly why I like it. UPenn is flying under the radar, and they’re coming in hot off a conference championship.
Illinois is getting respect based on their seed, but I’m not sold they’re as good as advertised. Meanwhile, UPenn has all the ingredients of a Cinderella. Momentum, confidence, and nothing to lose.
At the very least, they can keep this within the number, but don’t be surprised if this one gets really uncomfortable for Illinois late. Sprinkle alert.
