Lexington Letdown Week 2: Motivated Mark Stoops is Back

The Lexington Letdown rolls into Week 2 and it feels like déjà vu. Kentucky fans thought the “Motivated Mark Stoops” era was back in business. It turns out the only thing that is back is the same old script.

Our Lexington Letdown play for Week 2 is simple:

Zach Calzada Under 157.5 Passing Yards vs Ole Miss

The Calzada Problem

Calzada has bounced around more than a pinball machine and landed in Lexington to be QB1. The problem is his talent looks more FCS than SEC. Against Ole Miss the Rebels will bring pressure, play fast, and force Calzada into checkdowns. He is not built to move the ball vertically and his stat line will show it.

The Stoops Mirage

Kentucky fans spent the offseason convinced Stoops was “motivated.” He said it, the fanbase ate it up, and the media ran with it. Now reality sets in. Stoops is not motivated enough to turn Calzada into a quarterback who can hit 158 yards against a defense that thrives on chaos. This is the same Kentucky program that always promises a step forward before tripping over itself in September.

Why the Under Cashes

The number is set at 157.5 because oddsmakers know Calzada struggles to even flirt with 200 yards. Even in a home game with Kroger Field behind him the matchup is ugly. Ole Miss will speed things up on defense and Stoops will try to hide his quarterback with a heavy run game. Expect Calzada to finish with something like 12 completions for 120 yards and no momentum.

The Lexington Letdown Lives

Motivated Mark Stoops was a one year story. The Lexington Letdown is eternal. Calzada’s under 157.5 is the Week 2 play, and when it cashes, Big Blue Nation will be right back to toxic. And I cannot wait to see it. There is no team that loves riding the SEC more than the school that has never contributed to its football success.
